Medaka Box – 01

01: To carry out the will of the student council!

What am I getting myself into? A new series from GAINAX, that’s what. Without further hesitations, let’s begin.

After Medaka’s speech about solving people’s problems all day every day, we’re introduced to Hitoyoshi Zenkichi and Shiranui Hansode, who discuss her ways. After saying he definitely won’t be joining the council, Medaka herself comes in and, as Shiranui puts it, abducts him. See, these two are childhood friends, and it seems like Medaka is always dragging protagonist into things. And it’s no different this time, with a problem the Kendo Hall is having. The club has basically dissolved into delinquent’s smoking and loitering, it seems, but Medaka is off to set things straight again, with Zenkichi on the sidelines. Everyone in the Kendo Hall pretty much hates her, and were the supposed 2% that didn’t vote for her, but she’s only there to set them straight, not bicker. For a power-mad student council president, Medaka has a lot of strength. Even if it is a bunch of so-called basic techniques, she owns everyone. Then holds earth in the palm of her hands, and crushes the hopes of these poor young men who just like playing with wooden swords.

So we get to a problem, Medaka can’t get past the fact that she wants everyone to be as good as her. Shiranui makes Zenkichi less worried after telling him that once the positions are filled for the council, perhaps Medaka will lay off. Zenkichi confronts Medaka after viewing the nice cleaned hall, and says that she’s wrong for what she does, but he’s in for a surprise when the delinquents from before show up, ready to stand tall and never give up kendo. Flustered, Zenkichi leaves, and realizes that he was in the wrong. He’s attacked by a student wielding a kendo sword, though, the same one from in-class before. Yes, it was this man who submitted the Kendo Hall problem to Medaka’s suggestion box. Shiranui walks alongside Medaka to sort of clue her in on stuff she may want to know, like stuff about this man who submitted his problem. I kinda laughed at this scene, Shiranui is hilarious, honestly, but anytime in anime when the characters start talking fast, it’s pretty hilarious.

Anyway, Hyuga, the submitter, attacks the Kendo Club because he wants to be the only member. Crazy guy. Zenkichi stops him from completely annihilating them, however, saying that Medaka is more right than he is. This scene is crazy because Hyuga loses it. He was planning on acting like a good boy in high school, but it turns out that old habits die hard, and he’s really just a crazy son of a bitch. He’s put in his place, though. Medaka’s not mad at him, when she goes to talk to him, and hey, she left Shiranui in charge of the council recruitment. Nice thinking, I’d totally trust her. Medaka’s confronting Hyuga because Shiranui had given a request to fix up Hyuga’s attitude. As a resolve, Hyuga now instructs the Kendo Hall. Medaka skipped the meeting, sure, but she really has no interest in working with anyone but Zenkichi. You know, since he understands her. He vows to help her transform the schools, and is granted the rank of General Affairs Manager. So begins the tale of Zenkichi and Medaka and the suggestion box that will change the school into a field of flowers.

So what we have here is a colorful and fast-paced comedy from GAINAX. This isn’t my usual fare, but I’m happy to be taking this series on alongside Hyouka, which begins next week. Forgive me if I’m a little rusty, as with P4A, I knew the plot already, and it was easier to right the blogs, but I’ll gradually try to get less wordy and a little more opinionated. I’m interested, also, in how many people are going to watch this series! Right now, I have higher priorities than blogging, such as SATs and AP tests, but I’ll try my hardest to get these posts out. I can’t believe it’s been six months since I blogged a brand new show.
