Martin-sensei’s Guide to Jazz: Sakamichi no Apollon Episodes 6 & 7
May 27, 2012 in Currently Blogging Anime, Sakamichi no Apollon/Kids on the Slope
Martinman decided to take a vacation and instead of hiring a mediocre substitute to cover last week’s lesson, we decided to knock two episodes out in one post.
Ghosty: Anything else to add?
Martinman: I found it amusing how Kaoru is now popular among the ladies of his class.
Ghosty: Yeah, I thought that was pretty good!
Ghosty: And I noticed that people are starting to pair them up together.
Ghosty: What good shippers
Ghosty: Hey, there’s this drum solo in this Coltrane album you linked me
Ghosty: and it sounds like the drum solo that Sentarou did in the first episode
Martinman: The drum solo is A Love Supreme is Elvin Jones IIRC, who plays in a similar style to Sentarou
Martinman: Because of vacation issues, I ended up watching these two episodes back-to-back
Martinman: And it worked well.
Ghosty: I’ll bet.
Ghosty: I really appreciate that this show doesn’t drag out drama for more than an episode or 2.
Martinman: Definitely.
Martinman: I’m an action man. I don’t like drama.
Ghosty: That kid
Ghosty: Matsuoka
Ghosty: Fuck that guy.
Ghosty: I have a feeling he’ll back off after that medley though.
Martinman: Probably. He knows who owns Sentarou’s ass.
Ghosty: I was slightly impressed with Maruo’s guitar skills
Martinman: Yeah, for a train freak, he was pretty good.
Martinman: I was not expecting that.
Ghosty: Neither was I.
Ghosty: He’s still a nerd though. <_<

Martinman: In any case, I think the ‘God Knows’ episode of Haruhi has been upstaged.
Ghosty: Definitely!
Martinman: Even though Haruhi went into that gig not knowing the music, it can’t compare to an amazing performance that doubled as a reconciliation in a bromance for the ages.
Ghosty: I’ve been reading the manga as I watch the episodes.
Ghosty: So obviously I’ve been spoiled for a few scenes that weren’t in the anime (yet).
Ghosty: Definitely!

Ghosty: I’ve been reading the manga as I watch the episodes.
Ghosty: So obviously I’ve been spoiled for a few scenes that weren’t in the anime (yet).
Martinman: I saw in the OA thread that there was something you though could have been done better.
Ghosty: Was it the thing with Kaoru’s mother?
Martinman: Yeah. It makes so much more sense. Since you’ve read the manga, go ahead and explain it.
Ghosty: Well…
Ghosty: Apparently
Ghosty: The reason Kaoru’s mother had left was because she was uneducated. Papa Nishimi, having come from a rich and prestigious family, hid this from his folks.
Ghosty: After his family found out, they completely rejected her.
Ghosty: Kaoru’s mother planned to run away with Kaoru, after she and his father grew apart. Just before she could get a train ticket, Grandpa Nishimi came and took her baby!
Martinman: Wow.
Ghosty: So yeah. That just left Mama Nishimi alone with no one. At least she knew Kaoru would be in good hands with the Nishimi family.
Martinman: Poor lady.
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: I guess an education isn’t as easy to get when you are an adult.
Martinman: It’s not, trust me.
Ghosty: I don’t mean a college degree either.
Ghosty: She couldn’t read or write!
Martinman: A college degree is hard enough; I can’t imagine having to go back to get a GED or the Japanese equivalent.
Martinman: Or…learning to read and write.
Ghosty: Yeah…
Ghosty: There’s also a part of the manga that they didn’t include in the anime
Ghosty: but
Ghosty: I have a feeling they might throw it in later.
Martinman: So…in your opinion, how good, as an adaptation, is the anime?
Ghosty: Well.
Ghosty: Personally, I like when adaptations are true to the source material. At the same time, I don’t really like it if it’s a literal adaptation, word for word and all.
Ghosty: While I think they could have gone further into certain parts of the story, I think the show does a good job already.
Ghosty: Then again, Sakamichi is supposedly 11 episodes long, being a Noitamina show and all. I’m sure with one extra episode, they could have fit a little more.
Martinman: MAL still has no length listed…I think they had it at 11 at one point, but changed it.
Martinman: So it could go on for 22 like Shiki did, and still have 2 extra episodes.
Ghosty: Possibly.
Ghosty: But I think the manga is finished.
Martinman: Ah.
Ghosty: Oh, it has 9 volumes.
Ghosty: aaaaaand we’re at volume 4-5
Martinman: hmmm
Martinman: So about halfway done.
Ghosty: Yup
Martinman: The entire thing would end up being adapted. which is good. I hate unfinished business.
Ghosty: Same here.
Ghosty: Was it the thing with Kaoru’s mother?

Ghosty: So, I think there were some records at the record store scenes?
Ghosty: Yurika was gazing longingly at a Chet Baker album
Martinman: Yeah. Let me bring that scene up.

Ghosty: Yurika was gazing longingly at a Chet Baker album
Martinman: Yeah. Let me bring that scene up.

Martinman: Here’s the Chet Baker album
Ghosty: Different cover?
Martinman: Different colors
Ghosty: Oooh
Ghosty: Avoiding copyright stuff?
Martinman: I guess. There are a ton of misspellings on that Andrew Hill album.
Ghosty: Hahaha
Ghosty: Richurd Davis
Martinman: For instance, Kenny Durham is right (guitar player IIRC), but that should be Eric Dolphy (alto sax), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Richard Davis, and Anthony Williams.
Martinman: Joe Henderson is one of my favorite tenor sax players BTW.
Ghosty: Oh really?

Martinman: Sooooo sexy.
Ghosty: It sounds like something I would hear in an old movie.
Ghosty: I like it.
Martinman: If you listen to Steely Dan, you should recognize that bass line.
Ghosty: It sounds like something I would hear in an old movie.
Ghosty: I like it.
Martinman: If you listen to Steely Dan, you should recognize that bass line.
Ghosty: I’m worried about Jun.
Martinman: Jun is a total alcoholic at this point.
Ghosty: *sob*
Martinman: Which is sad, because alcohol and drugs have destroyed many a good jazz musician.
Ghosty: *SOB*
Martinman: On the bright side, maybe Yurika will dump him and go with Sen.
Martinman: I feel sick saying that. T_T

Ghosty: Speaking of which.
Ghosty: It seems like Yurika hasn’t been doing any hanky panky with Jun?
Martinman: No, I guess he was somewhere else for those few months.
Ghosty: Rather, it’s an infatuation? Maybe she confessed to him in a love letter and he was gone when she sent it.
Martinman: Dude was probably in a bar somewhere getting wasted.
Ghosty: Yeah u_u
Ghosty: I wonder what sort of breakdown he had.
Martinman: He coulda been getting some of that sweet Yurika poontang, and was instead getting some Jack Daniels, or whatever the heck they drink in Japan.
Ghosty: Wack Donalds.
Martinman: He was probably either sick at life, or realized that now matter how good he got, he would never be Chet Baker.
Martinman: Either way, it is enough to destroy a man.
Ghosty: u_u
Ghosty: I’m a bit curious as to what he studies in college though.
Martinman: Probably business.
Martinman: Just a hunch.
Martinman: I doubt it’s music though.
Ghosty: I’ll bet his parents want him to go into business, but he’s all “Screw you mom and dad. I want to play jazz!”
Ghosty: It seems like Yurika hasn’t been doing any hanky panky with Jun?

Ghosty: And eventually he realizes that he’s not as good as Chet.
Martinman: I doubt Jazz Studies was an available major at the time in Japan, and Jun doesn’t seem like a classical guy.
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: Maybe it’s just a hobby.
Martinman: I doubt Jazz Studies was an available major at the time in Japan, and Jun doesn’t seem like a classical guy.
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: Maybe it’s just a hobby.
Ghosty: So, about that rock band…
Martinman: I lol’d
Ghosty: I really hope Matsuoka doesn’t take his dreams of stardom seriously.
Martinman: Although, I have to be honest, I wish American high schools did more of that.
Martinman: The school I taught at last year had a talent show, and a student bad played a song.
Martinman: It wasn’t amazing, but it was fun for them, and fun for the other students.
Martinman: I also got to play, which was awesome.
Ghosty: Oh yeah?
Ghosty: What did you play for the band?
Martinman: EWI
Martinman: Electronic Wind Instrument.
Martinman: It’s the saxophone equivalent of electric guitar.
Ghosty: Ohhh
Ghosty: We had talent shows at my school, but my school wasn’t really big enough for a band to play.
Ghosty: My friend did the Haruhi dance and I pretended to not know her <_<
Martinman: We only had 400 students in the school, but there was a lot of talent.
Martinman: LOL
Ghosty: We had maybe… 30-40…
Ghosty: Anyway
Ghosty: I don’t know any of the other bands Matsuoka mentioned.
Ghosty: like The Ventures. Sounds like a Venture Bros band.
Martinman: I’ve never heard of them either. I’m not a big British Invasion fan.
Ghosty: I figured they were a part of that.
Martinman: Although I have/had a coworker who was, and probably owns relevant vinyl.
Ghosty: I might have a friend who knows of them, actually.
Ghosty: She’s big into mod stuff and British bands.
Martinman: Cool.

Martinman: Yeah.
Martinman: Man, dat fang.
Martinman: Yeah.
Martinman: Man, dat fang.
Ghosty: I hope I’m not the only one annoyed by that.
Martinman: Dude was such a homo.
Martinman: And I’m not one to usually use that word as an insult.
Ghosty: Same.
Ghosty: He just really rubs me the wrong way, like with Kaoru.
Martinman: For a guy who was so adamant about getting girls, he seemed awfully gay.
Ghosty: Yup.
Ghosty: His voice is so distinct too.
Ghosty: Apparently he shares a seiyuu with Origami Cyclone from Tiger and Bunny <___<
Martinman: LOL

Martinman: The ultimate Weaboo.
Ghosty: God, love that blonde weaboo.
Martinman: Origami Cyclone

Ghosty: God, love that blonde weaboo.
Ghosty: So let’s talk Coltrane, shall we?
Martinman: I own 17 or 19 Coltrane albums
Martinman: Second only to Miles Davis in my collection.;
Martinman: Lemme look through my list:
Martinman: Africa/Brass, Afro Blue Impressions (live), Ascension, Ballads, Blue Trane (one of the best jazz albums ever), Coltrane, Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane’s Sound, Crescent, Giant Steps (one of the best jazz albums ever), Live at the Village Vanguard, A Love Supreme (the best Christian album EVER), My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport, Newport ’63, Ole Coltrane, and The Paris Concert
Martinman: Blue Train was one of the first few jazz albums I ever got.
Martinman: I also have I don’t want to think about how many Miles Davis albums Coltrane played on.
Ghosty: Wow
Martinman: I think I’ve shared Blue Train before.
Ghosty: On one of the previous blogs?
Martinman: Yes.
Ghosty: I think you have

Ghosty: Wow, 30 minutes
Martinman: As someone of the Christian Faith, this album has a special place in my heart. Coltrane has actually been granted Sainthood by a branch of the African Catholic Church, and this album is performed in some worship services.
Ghosty: Wow, really?
Martinman: Yes. If I ever go to California, I plan to see it.
Ghosty: Cool!

Ghosty: Do you think there’s a connection between Christianity in this anime and Coltrane?
Martinman: There may be later, but as of now, no.
Ghosty: I kind of hope they touch on that again later.
Ghosty: There’s one track on the soundtrack that I think would fit
Martinman: That would be awesome, but I don’t remember seeing Yurika’s parents in the church.
Martinman: Which song?
Ghosty: You mean Ritsuko?
Ghosty: Ummm
Martinman: er
Martinman: yeah
Martinman: alcohol
Martinman: it will mess you up
Ghosty: I think it’s Rosario
Ghosty: Anyway, I guess given the title, it will have something to do with Christianity.
Martinman: Indeed.
Ghosty: I found it funny that Tsutomu picked on Sentarou for going to rock music.
Martinman: Are you familiar with Megadeth?
Ghosty: I don’t listen to them, but I’m sure I’ve heard some songs
Martinman: Dave Mustain, the founding member, formerly of Metallica before they made it big, picked a jazz guitar player and a jazz drummer to be some of the first members of his bad.
Martinman: They had more technical ability than the other guys, so Dave got them in. And they kicked butt.
Ghosty: Ooooh
Martinman: There may be later, but as of now, no.

Ghosty: Ooooh
Ghosty: Speaking of manga differences
Ghosty: There’s another part they left out
Ghosty: Before Sentarou decided to join the band, Matsuoka used his creepy stalker skills and found the record store and the basement where they practiced.
Ghosty: So Kaoru is all “Yo, wtf are you doing here? This is for jazz only”
Martinman: lol
Ghosty: and Matsuoka is all “lol jazz is so old though. Rock is where it’s at. Screw jazz”
Ghosty: and Sentarou is all “WTF ARE YOU DOING HERE? ANYONE WHO DISRESPECTS JAZZ CAN’T BE HERE. GTFO”
Martinman: awesome
Ghosty: I’m disappointed that they left that out!
Martinman: To be fair though, liking Rock n’ Roll =/= disrespect jazz
Martinman: People have different motivations for making music.
Martinman: Some just want to pick up chicks, and others want to make art.

Martinman: Some just want to pick up chicks, and others want to make art.
Ghosty: Well, Matsuoka was actually saying that jazz was too old.
Martinman: Ok, that is just lame.
Ghosty: yeah
Ghosty: I guess Matsuoka isn’t a complete antagonist
Ghosty: but
Ghosty: I really thought he’d deliberately try to break up their friendship just for a drummer
Martinman: I doubt he is competent enough to do so.
Martinman: He is decent manipulator, but not a good one.
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: Kind of a suck up, at least
Martinman: Sucking up will only get you so far.
Ghosty: True, true.
Martinman: Ok, that is just lame.
Ghosty: yeah

Ghosty: My Favorite Things was written by Coltrane, right?
Martinman: Well, it was actually a Rogers and Hammerstein tune written for ‘The Sound of Music’, but the jazz version was popularized by Coltrane
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: I still need to finish that movie.
Martinman: Well, it was actually a Rogers and Hammerstein tune written for ‘The Sound of Music’, but the jazz version was popularized by Coltrane

Martinman: The movie is great.
Ghosty: They’re incorporating a lot of Coltrane, I think.
Martinman: For sure.
Ghosty: Yeah, I watched like maybe 45 minutes of it over winter break but then I had to do something else.
Martinman: My Favorite Things was not a jazz song before Coltrane did it.
Ghosty: Yeah, though you kind of mislead me to think it was before.
Ghosty: Wow, this is nice.
Ghosty: They’re incorporating a lot of Coltrane, I think.
Martinman: For sure.

Martinman: My Favorite Things was not a jazz song before Coltrane did it.

Ghosty: Wow, this is nice.
Ghosty: Did you ever notice that Sen is left-handed?
Martinman: I did, in this episode, yes.
Martinman: I am left-handed as well.
Ghosty: You two are so alike!
Ghosty: Left handed jazz geeks!
Martinman: Indeed.
Ghosty: Btw
Ghosty: did you think Kaoru was acting selfishly in the last episode?
Martinman: For sure, yes.
Ghosty: I agree, he did overreact and take things to far
Ghosty: but I get where he’s coming from.
Ghosty: He’s had to transfer several times, I think.
Ghosty: So he’s never really had permanent friends.
Martinman: Indeed.
Ghosty: Still, it was a bit childish.
Martinman: Definitely. I had hoped this show was beyond that crap.
Ghosty: It can’t be helped
Ghosty: Like I said earlier, I’m glad they at least resolve it within an episode.
Ghosty: At this point, I’m sure the only thing we have to concentrate on is Yurika/Sen/Jun
Martinman: I did, in this episode, yes.
Martinman: I am left-handed as well.
Ghosty: You two are so alike!

Ghosty: What did you think of the medley?
Martinman: It was quite interesting considering how different those songs are.
Martinman: Moanin’ is a very earthy blues, and My Favorite Things is kind of a whimsical pop song turned into an emotional Coltrane song.
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: And he snuck Someday My Prince Will Come in there
Martinman: Lol, yeah.
Martinman: It’s amazing how much you can fit in when you want to. There was guy in my high school jazz band who put the “Go Go Power Rangers” part of the Power Rangers theme into everything.
Ghosty: wow
Ghosty: that’s awesome
Martinman: It really was. I did the same thing on my last solo as a high schooler.
Ghosty: Haha. Teacher didn’t mind?
Martinman: Teacher had no clue. It was an improvised solo, so you can really play whatever fits.
Ghosty: nice
Martinman: It was quite interesting considering how different those songs are.
Martinman: Moanin’ is a very earthy blues, and My Favorite Things is kind of a whimsical pop song turned into an emotional Coltrane song.
Ghosty: Yeah

Martinman: Here’s the song in question.
Martinman: Get in Line by Gordon Goodwin
Martinman: It was by far the most fun song to play ever.
Ghosty: Large band?
Martinman: Yeah, it is a big band.
Martinman: Gordon Goowin’s Big Phat Band
Ghosty: It’s interesting
Martinman: It has one of the most ballin’ alto sax solos ever.
Ghosty: So does music really bring about a reconciliation in rocky friendships?
Martinman: I have no idea.
Martinman: In anime world though, who knows.
Ghosty: I just thought it was really cool. They didn’t need to share any words. They just played what they knew, even making it a little different.
Ghosty: The power of friendship!
Martinman: Indeed.
Ghosty: I also enjoyed they way they animated the scenes where the students got other students to watch.
Martinman: Yeah, that looked really good.
Ghosty: Normally, a scene like that wouldn’t even grab my attention.
Ghosty: The animators did a wonderful job.
Martinman: It looked quite…magical.
Martinman: Or surreal, or something.

I thought Kaoru was being a massive bitch over the whole Matsuoka thing considering that Sentarou was already going to tell them it’s a one-off festival show. He did acknowledge that it was a childish reaction, but it didn’t help that he was still being butthurt for 4/5ths of the 7th episode. On the other hand, it did give me an appreciation for Sentarou and his happenings around Yurika, Jun, and Matusoka.
I’m actually big into Britpop and The Beatles, but The Ventures is actually a US band that got big in Japan with their famous Surfer music. They did Hawaii-Five-O’s theme song
Oh, that’s good to know. I know I’ve heard the name before, but I just assumed they were BritPop.
I did not know that. Learn new things every day.
Review had me laughing so hard! When ep 7 started I was thinking “Sen would never join that stupid kids band permanently, would he?” I wanted him and Kaoru to make up so bad that I was mega-tearing up when they played together at the end!! If the series ends up being only 11 eps, I hope they don’t rush anything and sum it up nicely. It would be even better if I had more than that to look forward to in the 22 ep scenario.
Martinman: Really enjoying all the little jazz snippets you added this time. I took a Survey of Jazz class a few semesters ago and did my final CD review on Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. The music tells such a great story. It’s very inspiring.
i LOVED the part with karou and sentarou playing at the end! i watched it twice such an awesome scene! that defz goes on my top fav. music scenes (alongside haruhi’s god knows and sawakos preformance at her friends wedding from k-on)
i liked the guy with the fang, hes cute. also he voices alotta anime chars like eiji from bakuman and accelator from index. (at least thats wut chapperz said and hes the VA guru :P) my bf also seems to like him too…..much in the same way he likes rin from polar bear cafe <_<
anyway, im glad they didnt drag the drama on for too long. im worried about jun too why is he hiding out at the record store? and he looked pretty messed up. i wonder wutll happen with that one chick and setarou?
While I still give Haruhi’s Live the edge in dynamism and sheer, “THIS is how you animate a concert” attitude, the jam in Sakamichi ep 07 is simply sublime. And it means more, as it repairs a friendship and shows why that friendship is worth all the angst that even high-schoolers can bring to it.
