Martin-sensei’s Guide to Jazz: Sakamichi no Apollon episodes 8 & 9

June 9, 2012 in Currently Blogging Anime, Sakamichi no Apollon/Kids on the Slope

Yurika takes her first step in preparing to be penniless.

Martinman needs to pick up  the pace with his anime watching.

Also, Maruo might be getting his dick wet. Yes, that’s my new favorite thing to say.

Martinman: So…These episode
Martinman: *episodes
Martinman: the drama
Martinman: THE DRAMA
Ghosty: SO GOOD
Martinman: These episodes where what I was expecting from the show; not the way I was expecting them, but the quality.
Ghosty: Oh yeah?
Martinman: especially the whole subplot between Yurika and Jun
Martinman: that was awesome
Martinman: the whole climax of these two episodes was Jun pulling her onto the train.
Martinman: Screw arraigned marraige, marry for LOVE
Martinman: and MUSIC
Ghosty: YES!
Ghosty: I really liked Yurika in these episodes
Martinman: I was yelling “PULL HER ONTO THE TRAIN” at the end there, right before he did >_>
Martinman: I was sad that Yurika cut her hair, but I guess that is some kind of significant thing in Japanese culture, at least as far as I can tell from the anime I’ve seen.
Ghosty: yeah, they cut their hair for several reasons, I believe
Ghosty: I am a huge fan of short hair, but I thought she was cuter with long hair
Ghosty: however, the short hair made her seem much more mature
Martinman: I’m a long-hair man myself.
Martinman: What I really liked was how the played up this massively sexual relationship between Yurika and Jun, and then Yurika is all “WHY DID YOU DO NOTHING MORE THAN KISS ME!?!?!?!!?”
Martinman: Dat mom
Martinman: and her gynocology appointment
Martinman: lol
Ghosty: I know!
Ghosty: Such a worrywort
Ghosty: but moms will be moms
Martinman: mothers gonna mother
Ghosty: I’ll bet her father is going to do the same thing Jun’s parents did to him
Martinman: For sure.
Martinman: Hopefully though, Yurika and Jun will get married have tons of hot steamy jazz sex.
Martinman: and forget about their parents
Ghosty: Hotttttt
Martinman: HAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTt
Martinman: Actually, I don’t know if there is such a thing as hot steamy jazz sex, but there needs to be.
Ghosty: Honestly, how can anyone not like Yurika after this episode?
Martinman: Because people touch themselves at night.
Ghosty: Trufax

Important Haircut TV Trope. Funny how two haircut episodes aired on the same day.

Ghosty: So I’m expecting this show to be around 11 episodes, given that it’s a Noitamina show
Ghosty: So that means there would be 2 episodes left
Martinman: I could see it having a very open-ended ending
Martinman: and that not being a bad thing if done right
Ghosty: True
Ghosty: If anything, I would like to see a movie.
Ghosty: for a conclusion
Martinman: A movie would be epic.
Ghosty: Absolutely!
Ghosty: I wonder how they’re going to fit Ritsuko’s rendition of My Favorite Things too.
Ghosty: There is this one event in the manga that would have been in the anime a few episodes ago, and it never happened, but maybe it will be a quick scene in the next few episodes.
Ghosty: WHOA
Ghosty: According to ANN, there are 12 episodes!
Ghosty: AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Martinman: wow
Martinman: Noitamina shows are ALWAYS 11, or maybe 22 like Shiki
Ghosty: Yeah
Ghosty: I am pleased!
Ghosty: This is going to be so good, I can feel it!
Martinman: Indeed.

Didn't this guy learn anything?

Martinman: So…that Christmas party…
Martinman: what kind of host show up in a Toga?
Martinman: I don’t care what the name of your band is
Martinman: that was just gross
Ghosty: Ugh
Ghosty: Such a show off.
Martinman: Yep.
Ghosty: Probably to get his dick wet.
Martinman: Or try to.
Martinman: He can’t; not without artificial lube and a dude’s butt.
Ghosty: Hahaha.
Ghosty: You know, it’s so weird seeing time pass by in this show.
Martinman: How so?
Ghosty: I had completely forgotten that Christmas had happened before
Ghosty: And then Kaoru mentioned Sen’s birthday and I was like “OH YEAH THE DRUMSTICKS”
Martinman: Oh yeah. A year had passed since that point, and we’ve hardly seen any of it…
Ghosty: Man, it’s like every few episodes have changed seasons
Ghosty: Kind of like how the Aria manga covers a season for each volume.
Martinman: I have not read the Aria manga
Martinman: or seen the anime <_<
Ghosty: How sad
Martinman: I own the first season though
Martinman: it will happen
Martinman: eventually
Ghosty: Once you start, you can’t stop.
Ghosty: Unless you’re me, and never want it to end.
Martinman: I want things to end, even when I don’t.
Ghosty: Speaking of endings, I keep getting somewhat spoiled for the ending of the manga.
Ghosty: They’re not major spoilers, but more like plot points that I know are going to happen.
Ghosty: I won’t share them, unless you want me to.
Martinman: Don’t.
Martinman: We can save them for the final episodes.
Ghosty: Great.
Ghosty: So, I don’t really have any knowledge of Japanese history after WWII
Ghosty: Did you understand the whole thing with Junichi and the revolution?
Martinman: no, although I feel it was pretty obvious
Martinman: students were pissed about tuition
Martinman: and possibly US presence
Ghosty: Hmm, yeah
Ghosty: though I didn’t understand why they had to bring it all the way to Kyushu.
Ghosty: Unless it was all over Japan and not just Tokyo?
Martinman: Who know..
Ghosty: Ah well.
Ghosty: At least he’s starting to get his life back together.
Martinman: For sure.
Martinman: Also, I wanted to mention that we finally got a sax player!
Martinman: …Only, his hands are broken. :|
Ghosty: Oh yeah u_u
Martinman: I was pissed when I heard that.
Martinman: On several different levels.
Ghosty: Saxophone in my jazz anime?
Ghosty: How ridiculous!
Ghosty: Whoever heard of such a thing?
Martinman: This show has been borderline blasphemous for it’
Martinman: its lack of sax.
Ghosty: Hey
Ghosty: Maybe we will have a two-parter episode
Ghosty: That involves a transvestite sax player
Ghosty: and every time you turn on the tv to watch the show, it’ll be the only episode you see.
Martinman: I liked that idea better when Cowboy Bebop did it.
Ghosty: That was the joke!
Martinman: I know.
Ghosty: Maybe Maruo will be so inspired by jazz, he’ll pick up the sax.
Ghosty: And get his dick wet.
Martinman: Fat chance.
Ghosty: What? The sax part or getting his dick wet?
Martinman: sax has gotten me absolutely nothing
Martinman: true fax
Ghosty: I’m sorry.
Martinman: Don’t be.
Martinman: The female race is not worthy.
Martinman: When I meet the one who is, she will get it.
Ghosty: Good.
Ghosty: So how about that jazz session?
Ghosty: Where Kaoru and Sen banged on the drums and piano and it was really weird?
Martinman: That was like audial sexual dysfunction.
Ghosty: For real
Ghosty: But the Junichi/Sentarou jazz battle
Ghosty: Amazing
Martinman: That was awesome.
Martinman: I’m not sure that I can think of any trumpet/drum battles from any recordings I have.
Martinman: I’m sure there is something out there; I’m just now sure what it is.
Ghosty: I loved how Tsutomu was like “Hey, let me in on this!”
Martinman: Dude is so boss. Plays teh bass and doesn’t afraid of anything.
Ghosty: Whoever his wife is, must be a very lucky woman.
Martinman: His penis is massive.
Martinman: For sure.
Ghosty: As big as his bass?
Martinman: Prolly.
Martinman: In the Stephen King novel The Green Mile there is a guy playing with himself, and Kind describes it as “plucking the string on a bass” or something like that.
Martinman: I’m not sure why I thought of that, or if I really want to know why.
Ghosty: The mental images…
Martinman: This guy also masturbated in his prison cell IIRC.
Martinman: Let’s change the subject. We need to continue with this review.
Ghosty: Yeah.
Ghosty: Uhhh
Ghosty: I totally expected Ritsuko to knit Kaoru a scarf or a sweater.
Martinman: Yeah. Although it makes sense, since he has to protect his hands.
Ghosty: True
Ghosty: And gloves takes a lot of work, I think.
Martinman: most likely.
Ghosty: Idk, I’m not a knitter.
Martinman: I’m sure making the fingers would be most difficult.
Ghosty: Yeah.
Ghosty: Makes me super excited for the next episode though :D
Ghosty: Finally, a real love confession!
Martinman: There has been too much beating around the bush.
Ghosty: I’m glad Ritsuko and Sentarou got their misunderstandings cleared up.
Ghosty: Anything else we should mention?
Martinman: Can’t think of anything, other than Kaoru continuing to be a lady’s man.
Ghosty: Oh yes.
Ghosty: I can somewhat relate to him at that party.
Martinman: That was me at every party I’ve ever been to.
Martinman: I hate parties.
Martinman: HATE them.
Ghosty: I don’t know any popular music anymore, so I couldn’t fit in at a party with a bunch of people I barely know.
Martinman: I fail to see the appeal of getting drunk in a group when I can get drunk alone.
Martinman: With better booze and better music.
Ghosty: I like getting drunk with my friends, at least
Ghosty: on the rare occasions that I drink
Martinman: I have all of 2 friends who like to drink as much as me
Martinman: One of them lives an hour away from me, the other 3.5 hours away from e.
Martinman: *me
Ghosty: Sad…
Ghosty: All of mine live in my house (or practically in it)
Martinman: I take that back
Martinman: there is a guy who lives close to me
Martinman: but he’s in Europe for a month.
Martinman: so…
Ghosty: u_u

Lisa Simpson isn't the only one to have a cat named after a Jazz musician.

Ghosty: So, got any jazz links for us?
Martinman: Not really.
Martinman: Pretty much everything has been played before.
Ghosty: Well.
Ghosty: I have nothing else, really.
Ghosty: Yurika naming her cat Chet was cute though
Martinman: Yeah.
Ghosty: I think she’s just a strong character in general
Ghosty: That was random
Ghosty: but it’s true.
Martinman: It is.
Martinman: She’s the only one who has been fairly certain of what she wanted in regards to romance, and has taken major steps to make it happen.
Martinman: Granted, Jun was the one to pull her onto the train
Martinman: but he kind of needed to in order to show her that he truly had feelings for her
Ghosty: And she was ready to accept her punishment there.
Ghosty: Yeah. Way to show us that Jun has feelings!
Ghosty: Sexy Trumpet Man
….
….
Ghosty: MARTINMAN GET BACK HERE. WE HAVE TO DISCUSS RITSUKO’S FRIEND HAVING A CRUSH ON MARUO.
Apparently Martinman had too much to drink and passed out on his couch.
But I hope I’m not the only one who noticed Ritsuko’s friend looking in Maruo’s direction when they were talking about knitting.
Maybe he will pick up the sax after all. :)
Also, I wanted to discuss more differences in the manga and the anime.
When Yurika cut her hair, people were spreading rumors about her being seen with an older guy who looked washed up (which was true, but you know). Despite his feelings, Sentarou punched the fuck out of guys who were spreading this word to the school. What a noble gentleman!
I don’t remember if I ever mentioned this part before, but Sentarou had learned how to play the drums by a guy named Roy who frequented the bar Tsutomu goes to. After Roy left, Tsutomu bought the drumset he left behind and allowed Sentarou to practice in the basement as much as he wanted, which is how he met Junichi. I sure wish they kept this in the anime.
