Humanity Has Declined 7: I Think I’m a Clone Now
In this week’s Decline, Watashi is tasked to go search for grandpa’s Assistant who was busy getting a check-up. However, when the fairies offer her a mystical banana, she finds that time not only repeats itself but duplicates itself as well. Will she be able to escape from the cycle or will she have to create a time paradox to leave. Find out because it helps me forget about all the nothing I’ve been doing this week
We begin with Watashi distributing her canister of sweets among the fairies, but they are dismayed by the fact that very few people in the land know how to make sweets. Through this, they come up with a brilliant, awful idea to curb any of their withdrawals; cloning Watashi to make sweets.
She is then tasked by Grandpa to go find Assistant who just got out from his check-up at the doctor’s office. However, she has to borrow a sundial watch that Grandpa got from a mysterious woman he once met before she heads out. Things seem to be going smoothly until she is offered a banana by the fairies that has an odd flavor of nothing.
From that moment onwards, Watashi starts going through some weird visions such as seeing Grandpa riding a chariot and Assistant’s nurse standing outside. The nurse claims that Assistant just went away and that she couldn’t find him so while she looks about in the town, Watashi is tasked to look in the forest. Within the woods, she discovers something shocking: herself.
There are clones of Watashi that she discovers are gathered around an oven when suddenly, she slips on a banana peel and wakes up back at the house where Grandpa instructs her on finding Assistant as she continues to go through the same motions of eating the banana again and encountering all of the oddities around her, learning slowly with each time loop that more and more Watashi’s are gathering around the oven.
The skips become commonplace until Watashi starts to realize that the Watashi’s have been gathered together to bake sweets for the fairies. After questioning the Watashi’s on their mission of finding the Assistant and on why some of them have watches and some of them don’t, she decides to play along and cooks the banana but even cooking it proves to send Watashi hurling through the loop again.
The fairies decide to have mercy on Watashi and finally upgrade the banana so that there’s no more hiccups in the space time continuum. However, things get odd as the episode ends with Watash finding Assistant among a mass group of menacing dogs he has attracted.
Overall, I’d say that this is beginning to be an interesting arc with the fairies manipulating time itself to get Watashi to create sweets for them during her daily errands. Admittingly, I’m finding it much easier to get into this initial episode than the last two covering Pion with its fabulous complexity still being intact yet refraining from dumping too much information to make it easier to piece together everything. There’s still questions to be had with Assistant’s disappearance from the hospital and the dogs since this one focused on Watashi’s time hiccups with the fairies, though Jinrui should have us covered on that with the cliffhanger leading into the next episode.
