Ghost watches KyoAni and learns to love it: Tamako Market – 5
February 7, 2013 in Currently Blogging Anime, Tamako Market
Summer is here, and with summer comes love, and with love comes cockblocking.
This episode also made me want to go back to my family beach house this summer. There’s just something about the nice ocean breeze cooling you off in an house with no air conditioning that’s just so pleasant. However, that might just be me.
I was pretty right on the money last week when I speculated that this would be a Mochizou episode. However, I didn’t really think it would involve another character.
Midori may be in lesbians with our dear moe protagonist, but when another character is obvious about his feelings for her, she ain’t having none of that shit. While Tamako struggles to learn how to swim at the public pool before the big school camping trip, Mochizou struggles with his own feelings for Tamako while taking some advice from Dera on how to confess to her.
Though their struggles are not anything that would be tear-jerking to most people, they certainly are ones that anyone could relate to. Whether it’s being too shy to make friends with someone or confess your love for another, I feel like this show does a good job at tackling minor issues like these in a slice of life show without making it overdramatic.
Although it seems that the only thing Tamako struggles with is swimming and dealing with her stubborn father who usually comes around in the end.
Seeing as how this is the first KyoAni show I’ve been able to watch with full anticipation, I’m mostly unaware of whether or not they care to address romance in their shows, especially ones of the same-sex variety. I’m rather impressed that Tamako Market doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to Midori’s feelings for Tamako.
It also seems that the whole “Dera finding a bride for his prince” plot will probably never come to fruition, unless it’s meant to be one of those shows where everything seems happy and cute until the real drama pops up later on. Space Brothers, anyone?
He may as well just stick around to be a source of comedic relief.
Midori’s petty attempts at preventing Mochizou from confessing to Tamako end up in the two of them comparing each others’ friendship to her with one another. In a way, it’s kind of sad. Personally, I’m rooting for Mochizou, but I certainly wouldn’t mind if Midori got the girl in the end. Sadly, it seems that Tamako is too oblivious of a character to really recognize either of their feelings, especially Midori’s. Frankly, I don’t see this ending in romance at all, and I’m okay with that.
She’s totally going to want to suck your dick if that’s the case.
Midori seems more unsure about by this answer.
Eventually, Midori lightens up a little and even allows Mochizou to join in their reindeer games, which happens to be advertising their mochi shops on the beach during the fireworks display.
I’m also pretty disappointed by some people’s reactions to Midori’s cockblocking. Yeah, it’s kind of a dick move, but seriously… don’t hate on a character and want her dead just because they ruin your “precious OTP”.
The preview for next week seems like an episode surrounding the shopping district. I’m not entirely sure if they will focus on one character.

Remember when I said I was picking Hyouka back up?
WHY DID I EVEN DROP THIS SERIES IN THE FIRST PLACE???
The festival arc is so good! ;_;

Midori is easily my favorite character in Tamako Market so it’s no surprise that I thought this episode was one of the better ones of the series thus far. Seeing Midori and Mochizou start off bickering but then end up relating eachother’s perpetual frustration was great. As far as romance in KyoAni goes, it’s pretty much non-existent in terms of physical display (a kiss is extremely rare for instance). Midori is also the first KyoAni character who outright displays that she’s in love with a person of the same sex. So far I think they have handled her well. It’s not shoe-horned or played solely to gain otaku interest.
But yeah, Tamako Market is pretty much peanuts when compared to the wonderful execution of Hyouka’s KanyaFes arc. Glad to hear that you’re enjoying it. Now if only the author of the Hyouka novels could get out new volumes quicker than one every few years so I don’t have to wait for 2025 for a second season.
Between her, Mochizou and Shiori, it’s pretty hard to decide which one I like better. I’m also hoping for a Kanna episode soon as well.
Are the Hyouka novels still ongoing?
As far as I know they are still ongoing. The anime covers the first four novels, so only the 5th novel released in 2010 was not animated. I imagine there will be more though, especially with the anime raising the popularity of the novels.
Huh, so her lesbians for tamako is actually canon? cool! anyway, this was a pretty good ep. i liked that at the end she decided to let go of her grrzyness towards mochizou and the two became friends ^_^
